8 GREEN BUILDING MYTHS, BUSTED

Green building -- or sustainable building -- involves incorporating eco-friendly elements into the design and maintenance of a home and minimizing the impact on the environment when building houses, condos and the like.

More homeowners and builders are interested in green building and want to choose energy efficient features for their homes, so it's important to know what's fact and what's myth. The National Association of Home Builders says more builders are hopping on the green building bandwagon every month. A recent NAHB survey found that by the end of next year, half of it's members will employ some form of green construction in their homes. "We're starting to see 2007 as a tipping point", says Emily English, green building program manager at NAHB. 

Despite more awareness about green building, there is still a lot of confusion about exactly what green building is. For most experts, there are five main characteristics that define it:

Having an environmentally friendly site selection or "footprint" 
Using energy efficient designs and materials while building a "tighter" home. 
Reducing a home's water consumption 
Promoting a healthy indoor air environment. 
Emphasizing material conservation and waste reduction
